Launch of first boats built in the Longshed 4 May
The first two boats to be built in the Longshed will be named and officially launched on 4 May at 1pm. The last time a boat built from scratch and launched from Whisstocks was over 28 years ago so it is an occasion for celebration. We are very pleased that the launch coincides with the The Spirit of Beowulf Festival Fundraising Weekend (details are on our event page for 3-6 May) and that Sae Wylfing will be on the water to give the new craft a good send off.
The St Ayles 4-oar rowing skiff has been built (over about 700 man and woman-hours) by a group of enthusiastic volunteers over 8 months. The skiff project was funded through a generous grant from Suffolk Coastal District Council Enabling Communities Fund and donation from the makers of Life on the Deben. The photos below show progress from a flat-pack kit to the fine craft that will be handed over to the newly formed Woodbridge Coastal Rowing Club
The second boat, a pirogue canoe, has been built over two terms by members of Just 42 with support from WRT Trustee Mike Sutton (photos in the bottom line below).
